I have been using a Syquest drive for about 5 years with several
cartridges, initially as my main hard disk. I had a few bad sectors
develop on the cartridge which was in most use but otherwise no
problems. I must have dropped cartridges a few times but never done
any damage, the cases are very solid plastic. If you want to share
the drive Syquest do a parallel port version.
