There are many. The most useful command a newbie should know is "man" :-) Eg: man ls will show you the manual page for the ls command. Once you have logged in change directory into /usr/bin using the command: cd /usr/bin Most of the commands in this directory have manual pages - use man to look at any that take your fancy! As for "the down command" - I presume you mean to shut the system down? If you are logged in as root (or you have root privileges) then the command: shutdown -y -g0 will take the system down immediately (-g0) with no other user intervention (-y). NOTE: the options may be different on your flavour of unix. Use man shutdown to find out! Another way which is pretty much standard is: init 0 -- Richard Howlett mailto:richard@howie.org.uk

Also the > down command> Well assuming that you mean basic Unix commands, not a BASIC (Beginners All purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) interpreter, what you want is a book called "Unix for Dummies". No insult is intended, this is a very good introductory book, I had it at my bedside when I was starting out. I don't have it any more and I can't remember the ISBN, sorry. It's yellow:) You should find it in any decent computer bookshop. Please be careful with your capitalisation, it is meaningful. The "UNIX" is fine, it means a commercially licensed version as opposed to an open source version such as Linux (but did you mean this?). But "BASIC" is a language. Capitalising that made your post mean something er.. meaningless. To shut a machine down you use the command "shutdown". With various options. Don't use it until you know what you're doing. Don't use root until you know what you are doing, except on a scratch test machine. Ian
