Hello I'm a relative 'newbie' in linux terms, having so far only set it up to run IP masquerading to connect a small network to the internet via a shared modem and run a local web server to test CGI programs before uploading. As a consequence I may demonstrate a frightening amount of ignorance. I keep the /var/log/messages file open with less in a terminal window to keep an eye out for problems/attacks on the ipchains router/firewall. This is usually fairly quiet but every hour I get two groups of messages. One is of the form PAM_pwdb[xxxx] : su session opened for user news by uid=0 PAM_pwdb[xxxx] : su session closed etc next group are 4 messages from named about flushing the cache of RRs (what?) and usage statistics. Is there any way to reduce the frequency of these messages, presumably by reducing the frequemcy of the operations that generate them. I think I know what named is doing - DNS for my local network and lookups for internet requests, but I cant find how to change the time between "flushes". The other thing (PAM_pwdb) I have no idea about and havent been able to find in my books. Many thanks Mark who is so fed up with recieving offers of 20million email addresses every day that he has added a nospam to his email address

Thanks - that sorted out the news entries, innd was being invoked using su. That was the only entry though - no sign of anything to do with named so I'm none the wise on that one. Mark remove nospam etc....

Look in /etc/named.conf for the cleaning-interval and
statistics-interval entries - these have a numeric parameter which is
the time in minutes between cleaning the cache and between logging
access statistics. I think they default to 60 minutes, so if you don't
have them then add the lines
cleaning-interval 1440;
statistics-interval 1440;
within the curly brackets of the options { } section of named.conf.

PAM is the thingummybob which does your authentication. It looks like you've got your news daemon started as well as your name daemon. It looks like init is starting innd as user news doing some sort of chrooting when it kicks it off. Use linuxconf to disable news unless you need it ? May I ask - why would you want to reduce the logging of these messages ? /var/log/messages is the kernel log - lots of dead interesting stuff goes in there (if you're as sad as me :) Apologies if you've had your questioon answered already J0e "Mark Chater" <mark@chater.nospam.demon.co.uk> wrote in message news:399dc8d1.94690780@usenet.f9.net.uk... > Hello > > I'm a relative 'newbie' in linux terms, having so far only set it up > to run IP masquerading to connect a small network to the internet via > a shared modem and run a local web server to test CGI programs before > uploading.
