I recently switched from RedHat 6.1 to Mandrake 7 and I can't get the
net connection working under Mandrake. i set it up with Kppp and it
looks identical to the RH setup but when I try and connect it doesn't
work. All goes well and all the usual screechy noises come out of the
modem but when the carrier detected light switches on the connection
fails saying that the '...ppp daemon died unexpectedly'. The log file
shows the following error message:

Apr 15 22:53:55 jlstewart pppd[792]: The remote system is required to
authenticate itself but I
Apr 15 22:53:55 jlstewart pppd[792]: couldn't find any secret (password)
which would let it use an IP address.

What could be causing this? I have specified the IP address and its
correct. I have specified the correct DNS servers and the gateway. The
password in the password field is also correct. I have tried PAP, CHAP
and a number of login scripts but they all produce the same error.

Thanks,
Fraser
