have to re-boot to connect net !!??

Hello,

I am using Stefan Davids notes to connect to the Internet using Redhat
6.0 .....

Odd! - I reboot the computer and use "pppd call green"
as per his notes and can connect to Demon (ISP) and all works fine...

The only way I can disconnect though is by typing ps and getting say
661 tty1 00:00:00:00

I then do kill -9 661 and after a few seconds the line drops.

Whilst on-line ifconfig gives me info for eth0, lo and ppp0

If I now re-connect I get a line but cannot get on the Internet and
ifconfig shows eth0, lo, ppp0 and ppp1 !!!

I have to re-boot in order to connect correctly...!!!

Any ideas?

Cheers

Geoff

id say you dont want to be killing the tty. probably this is being
killed, but ppp isnt. so then you connect again and the next available
device is ppp1.

what are you using to connect with? wvdial/minicom/chat etc.
you probably want to kill that.

also a kill -9 is the harshest kill type. nothing can stop this from
killing the process. always try 1 and 2 first, to allow the process to
finish what its doing (for example removing ppp0 after quitting)

hope that helps

To attempt to end the Net coinnection I am using a script from the net

#!/bin/bash
DEVICE=ppp0

if [ -r /var/run/$DEVICE.pid ]; then
	kill -INT `cat /var/run/$DEVICE.pid`

	if [ ! "$?" = "0" ]; then
	rm -f /var/run/$DEVICE.pid
	echo "ERROR: Removed stale pid file";
	exit 1
	fi

	echo "PPP link to $DEVICE terminated.";
	exit 0
fi

echo "ERROR: PPP link not active on $DEVICE";
exit 1

This does say that PPP link to ppp0 terminated ...but the lineis not
dropped! Why??

killall pppd

should work, as should

kill `cat /var/run/ppp0.pid`

Geoff> I then do kill -9 661 and after a few seconds the line drops.

Don't use -9 unless more subtle measures have failed. SIGKILL is
necessarily terminal so the receiving process can't do any cleaning
up...

...which pppd needs to do in order for you to reconnect.

Geoff> Any ideas?

killall pppd or kill `cat /var/run/ppp0.pid` to disconnect. Give
processes a chance to behave before you SIGKILL them.

Hello,

success at last !! I setup the connection using linuxconf under gnome
and then used ifup ppp0 and to disconnect ifdown ppp0 - this allows me
to go for repetative connections without problems...having said all
that I have just noticed that the machine has dialled without me
asking it to !!

Cheers

Geoff

Meant to ask - having used linuxconf, ifup ppp0 etc - where is the
parameter info held? I cannot see where this auto dial is set?!
