NTP and demon with a leased line

Does anyone have experience with configuring ntp for a demon leased
line, specifically for Suns with Solaris 7 & Sun's ntp?

I did what I thought is reasonable (based on previous ntp setups), but
it seems to be hopelessly bad. I'm using the 3 ntp servers demon
list to sync one internal machine which then works as a server for a
bunch of clients. I'm unconvinced stuff is getting synced at all as
the clients don't sync to the server (I'm not good enough at reading ntpq
output to know if the server is synced to the demon machines, and I
can't do rsh foo date to find out if it's reasonably close...

Any help much appreciated!

Thanks

Not with Solaris, but my Linux server at work synchs with Demon's
ntp server using the rdate command, and appears to work fine.
The only problem I've got it trying to synch the rest of the domain
(sodding NT servers with their proprietry "NET TIME" commands).

I use Automachron for our NT and 98 machines, seems to do a good job.

They will talk to Samba... Just enable the time service
in smb.conf and don't enable any shares.

It turns out that there is a bug in Sun's xntpd such that it won't
sync with a 64-bit kernel, which is causing lossage as some of our
machines are 64bit. There's a patch (which I haven't tried yet), if
anyone else has the same problems I can mail you the patch ID.

Ta - I'll give it a go.

Hang on - does this mean that I can't have *any* directories
shared up under SAMBA?

It depends what you want it to do, if you simply want
an SMB time server you are not obliged to
share any directories or printers.

I actually want NT and '95 to synch with a time server and know
that NT can do that with AboutTime (but I can't run it as a service)
so I'd prefer to get my linux server to synch with an ntp server and
provide the synch for the company.

If samba is the way to do it, then I'll go that route - but I wouldn't
mind retaining samba for its file and print sharing.

nb: couldn't see the lines in smb.conf relating to time servers on
RH6.1 - what am I missing?

You need "time server = true" in the [global] section.
