I have registered a domain name through www.gradwell.com, and paid for web/email forwarding. So it seems appropriate to rename my network to match. I forsee some difficulties with mail transport and would appreciate some pointers before I go and mess it up! My domain is w-c-f.org.uk, so probably I shall name my linux box as w-c-f.org.uk and others on my lan as subdomains e.g. simon.w-c-f.org.uk (Or maybe the linux box should be somename.w-c-f.org.uk - I've just checked and found that http://w-c-f.org.uk takes me to my website, so naming my box as w-c-f.org.uk is perhaps not such a good idea!) 1) Sometimes I shall want to send mail to someone@w-c-f.org.uk (which is directly forwarded by gradwell to fred@another.isp) and want it to get out of here. I suspect that sendmail (8.9.1) will not be inclined to send it out since it will regard anyone@w-c-f.org.uk as local? Do I have to do anything special here? (This will apply to a maximum of five names, so some simple workaround will suffice - maybe an alias to someone%w-c-f.org.uk@smarthost ?) 2) Similarly what about majordomo? Currently majordomo runs as majordomo@child.demon.co.uk with maillist-L@child.demon.co.uk OK, I'll have to tell the list members the new address. Presumably if I name the linux box as w-c-f.org.uk then majordomo will name the lists as maillist-L@w-c-f.org.uk etc or maillist-L@somename.w-c-f.org.uk if I call it somename.w-c-f.org.uk? Is that all there is to it, majordomo will pick up whatever name I give the linux box? I think so, and perhaps this emphasises the importance of getting the lan renaming correct first go, since I shall want the mailing lists to end up with sensible and stable names. Any comments welcomed -- Simon Child

You don't have to accept email for that domain as local (listed in sendmail.cw or class W). I have much the same setup for netscum.org.uk and the people who do your email redirect actually rewrite the smtp envelope to whatever domain you specified. So as long as sendmail accepts whatever email address you've had it rewritten to you'll be fine. Simon> 2) Similarly what about majordomo? Majordomo will dealt with whatever lists it's given to my knowledge (when you set up the alias remember you tell it what email address it's serving). It will deal with list@box.demon.co.uk and list@box.co.uk in the same way if someone rewrites the smtp envelope box.co.uk to box.demon.co.uk. Prompted by James' posting I've just found the wherami in majordomo.cf. I did of course have a look before posting but it's so long since I set it up I was looking in the wrong place (I was looking in the individual lists config and had forgotten about majordomo.cf). As you imply, and which I was overlooking, since the incoming mail has had it's incoming address rewritten, majordomo will not even see it as w-c-f.org.uk, so in a sense nothing changes except for the info in majordomo.cf Thanks -- Simon Child

Yes I had thought of that > (So many ways...) .. to get it wrong ;-) Thanks to both of you, I'm clearer now: I think there's no real need to rename. It would be a little tidier, e.g. Outlook Express, as well as stripping the trailing space off my sig separator :-(( gives email message id's of xyz@tower.localdomain instead of 123@simon.w-c-f.org.uk, but it's only a nicety Incoming and outgoing mail should work alright (indeed are doing already as I haven't done any renaming) A tinker with majodomo.cf and the associated aliases should sort out the lists. Might cause me dns work if I rename. Cheers -- Simon Child
