`For those of you around a set tomorrow morning, the Channel 7 morning
`talk show "Company" (formerly Kelly & Company) has envited Kathleen
`Marquardt (National Chairperson of Putting People First) and Bruce
`Fluery (Detroit Chapter leader of Putting People First) on their Thursday
`morning broadcast to butt heads with individuals from various Animal
`"Rights" Organizations.
To follow up on the broadcast (unlike some others - Jennifer - who never
follow up on their activities as promised) I just wanted to say that all
went well. For the most part, the audience was made up of about 3-to-1
Putting People First supporters.
As far as my personal opinions of the show, it was biased from the start.
John Kelly and Marilyn Turner (shows hosts) were very obviously on the
side of the Animal Rights spokes persons. At no apparent fault of their
own (unless they knew people in the audience) they tended to pick the
questions from the audience from the AR-supporters at a 3-to-1 rate even
though they were greatly out numbered.
The materials brought by the PeTA member on the panel were the only materials
shown, and included a film from a medical research lab of a cat with some
sort of electric attachment to his brain (too bad I didn't get the chance
to comment on how the taking of the videos by PeTA spies deters them from
spending their time at doing their jobs - usually providing proper care
for the animals themselves) and another outdated video of a pig slaughter-
house.
I found it appaling that the AR-supporters in the crowds continually boo'd
and hissed the PPF members on the panel why no such activity came from
the PPF-supporters in response to the AR-members.
Reviewing the video, I was upset to see that one of the best audience
responses was left out for commercial break, but was glad to see that one
of the commercials was for Dinty Moore Beef Stew! The response that was
cut was in regards to recited statistic by the PeTA member (which I don't
think caught air either thank god) stating that only 7% of the US hunts.
Now personally, with the size of the population of the United states and
the diversity of the people and the culture therein, to think that 7% of
a group that large and diverse are involved in one activity is quite
a large portion I dare say! But the unfortunate quote that was left out
from one of the Woods & Water staff writers (young man - high school age -
by the way - real bright kid) was that though there are only 7% that do
hunt, over 80% support hunting.
I was also upset to see that when threatened at the end of the show by one
of our more flamboyant AR-locals, Jennifer Dodson, in regards to the pain
caused by leg-hold traps, Kathleen Marquardt's demonstration was practically
undiscernable due to a zoom out that regularly accompanies the end of the
show. In other words, she whipped out a trap, set it and put her hand in
it showing the whole audience then removed her hand to show there was nothing
wronge. I might add, I did not see her even flinch, and from my experience,
is was a moderate sized trap.
All in all it was a reasonable bout of wits. I would like to let any of you
know that if you want a copy of the show, I am more than happy to make and
forward a copy for $10 (to cover tape and shipping).
email me for an address if you are interested
