The restaurant name was a concatenation of the nicknames of the founders, Sam Battistone and Newell "Bo" Bohnett. When they discovered the old children's book Little Black Sambo, by Helen Bannerman, they adopted the character as their mascot. Despite its Indian setting, Bannerman's Sambo was a black caricature. The restaurant never changed its name. What was that you were saying about deep ignorance?
