'Nothing But Net'

A Newsletter for CalNet Members and the Rest of Netdom:
Mar.10/96 Vol.2 No.3
CalNet, The Calgary Internet Users Group

"Off the webbrowser, through the modem,
down the phoneline, Nothing But Net"

CalNet Presents Family Night at our Mar. meeting which
is upcoming on Thursday March 21. This meeting will be at the
Alberta Vocational College Main Auditorium at 7:00 PM.
Our guest speaker this month is David Schellenberg.
He will talking about Family related Internet Resources.
You may recall hearing him as a regular guest on CBC Calgary's
Eyeopener Morning Radio Show. Admission is free for members,
$5 for nonmembers. CalNet memberships will be available at the
door for $25/year. As always nonmembers are very welcome.

We are pleased to announce the return in May of the
Beginner's Guide To The Iway sponsored by AGT LTD (www.agt.net).
This is our premirie show for those new to Internet, not yet
online, or just interested in the subject. The date is May 16,
and tickets are now available at CalNet meetings for $5,
as usual admission is free for members.

Microsoft will be releasing version 3 of it's
Internet Explorer on March 12 to public beta with exciting
new features such as OLE, VB script, frames, and OCX controls.
The Internet Explorer has been gaining support with many ISP's
due to the fact that they can give it away for free, legally.
Personally I like it because it loads quicker than Netscape, and
seems to consume less system resources.

Have you noticed all those Blue Ribbons on a lot of websites?
Well they been placed there in support of Free Speech on the Internet.
The recently passed Telecommunications bill in the U.S. includes the
Communication Decency Act that seeks to restrict free speech on the
Internet. Many of us feel that one of the major powers of the Internet
concept is that it serves as the last real bastion of Free Speech in
the world, and thus must be protected. So wear the Blue Ribbon on your
webpage and show support for Free Speech in Cyberville.

It was announced this week that major US telephone companies
through the ACTA are going after makers of Net Phones. They are asking
the FCC to "Exercise jurisdiction over the use of the Internet for
unregulated interstate and international telecommunications services."
That should kill off any of these services real quick. The ACTA
general counsel is quoted as saying "You've got these Internet guru's
using these products who are actually more like hackers". That seem's
a little off base to me. I don't feel like a hacker when I use Internet
Phone for 1 minute, and then get cutoff because I was too cheap to pay
the registration fee. Anyone who has used these products knows they are
not going to replace long distance any time soon. The ACTA general
counsel went on to say "If this thing explodes it could dislocate
the entire existing telephone infrastructure." Well at least we agree
on something - KaBoom.

Our Web Site of the Month for March features five sites
from Calgary Junior and Senior High schools.

The Wacko Site Of The Month is the Department of
Interplanetary Affairs at http://www.maui.net/~daryl/enmar.html.
Hey if it wasn't all true, would it appear on the Web? I don't
think so.

        Trivia Question of the Month:
A toughie this month: What are the 3 M's in 3M, and for
bonus points what are the 3 COM's in 3COM.
First respondee with the correct answer will get mentioned
next month. Last month's question was:
Who coined the phrase "Information Super Highway."
And the answer was: Vice-President Al Gore.
The first correct answer last month was from Dan Swan.
