About a year ago, I posted the following to comp.dcom.modems.
********************************************************************
Many moons ago, I recall learning in a communications theory
class about Shannon's Law. This law stated that the maximum
transmission rate thru a channel was twice the bandwidth of that
channel. Thus, a 4 khz telephone channel would support an 8 khz
transmission rate.
Thus, I became curiouser and curiouser as modem speeds
increased.... has Shannon's Law been repealed, do I mis-remember,
or what is the magic that permits today's outrageous (and wonderful)
modem speeds?
**********************************************************************
I received many responses from the dcom gurus concerning
the theoretical aspects of modem operation at 28.8. Briefly,
operation at that speed is possible only under *pristine* line
conditions... as noted in a tech note from US Robotics.
For those who are interested, I have the responses to my
query in a file called shannon.zip available on my digex ftp
server (address below). Also, I think that comp.dcom.modems would
be a better place to continue this discussion.....
