MACWARE REVIEWS.......

HOTLINE CLIENT/SERVER -- Here's any easy-to-configure, easy-to-use
shareware pair that offers Apple networks chat, message posting, and ftp
capabilities in a friendly GUI. Both come in 68K and native PPC versions.
Both can be used on intranets or the Internet.

Snapshot Reviews.....

PageInspector -- I take issue with this HTML checker's critique of my
coding after it finds 43 alleged errors on the Snapshots page alone.

Ansel -- Here's you chance to participate in a beta development project
of a new image processing/analyization program. Program appears to have
most of the features found in commercial image processors like Photoshop,
plus the ability to work with digital video capture boards. Should be
interesting program to watch develop, though the GUI could use a facelift.

PersianRug -- Bored with your desktop pattern? Want something different?
How about randomly generated, fractal patterns. Some of them are exquisite.
Others will make you puke.

Toolvox Plug-in -- Yet another streaming audio plug-in for the Mac. What
sets Toolvox apart from the likes of RealAudio, is you can get their audio
encoder for free and deliver streaming audio from your web page without
expensive server software. I don't know how many simultaneous requests
it'll handle, but the price is certainly right.

TypeIt4Me -- Here's the jewel in this week's collection. This is one
slick program. No wonder Guy Kawasaki likes it and AOL gave it its
MUT Shareware award. This program lets you create typing shortcuts for
frequently used words and phrases. I am always having to type or cut&paste
MIT's HyperArchive URl in my reviews and believe me it's long.
Now all I do is type an abbreviation (mit) and viola... TypeIt4Me
automatically replaces it with this...

<a href="http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive/Archive/.hqx">

This is one I plan to keep.

NEXT WEEK ON MACWARE....

Here's a few of the new programs I plan to review for next week's edition.

Touch-3D Demo..... a 3D modeling program for the Mac with a really
neat set of movie demos to show you how to use the program.

SkyFighters ... WWII flight simulator program for ship-to-ship
aerial combat over the Internet. I soloed on this program last night
and it is slick. You can even design your own aircraft paint schemes.

Vivo Plug-in.... streaming video plug-in for the Mac.

APPLE/MAC O/S NEWS....

Apple plans to ship its new 7.6 upgrade this week and a lot of people will
be watching to see if Dr. Gil and Company can deliver on their promise.
There's a lot riding on this one and I am sure Apple knows it. Ship date
is the Friday, the 31st.

Apple has released its Java Runtime Engine and Applet Viewer for the
PowerPC. There's a direct link on Macware's frontpage to Apple's FTP site
where PowerPC owners can download the MRJ package. A 68K version is in the
works.

IBM, Paragraph and Apple have endorsed a new VRML (virtual reality modeling
language) standard which can reduce the size of VRML files to
as much as 1/50th their current size, making VRML more practical then it is
today. Developed by whoelse? Apple of course!

Curiously -- and I don't report this on Macware's frontpage, but MSNBC ran
a fascinating article this week on why Apple stock is a terrific buy right
now. Here's the URL of the article. Please go read it. It is very, very
enlightening.
