Subject: 3179-G-emulator for MS DOS

Dear networkers,

some weeks ago i asked for a IBM 3179 G emulator for MS DOS. This was
posted to a couple of lists:
  IBMTCP-L@PUCC TCP-L@IRLEARN DISSPLA@TAUNIVM GDDM-L@POLYGRAF
  GRAFIK-L@DEARN

The answers are presented here, some are edited: Part one deals with
3179 G emulators via Ethernet, the other part contains hints to other
emulators. Many thanks for all the answers...

Not to my knowledge, there is however a PC-telnet version for IBM-
3278 Terminal emmulation. if you want this you should contact the
firm FTP Software Inc. at 26 Princess ST. , Wakefield, MA 01880.
The Telephone number is 617 246 0900 x348.
You could also ask them for a 3179 G emm. for they are true specialist's
on PC to IBM communications over Ethernet.

> Experiences ? Which Ethernet card in the PC or PS/2 is supported ?

There are numerous (there are about 600 different version of the PC-
tcp packet) some of the cards supported are : 3com Etherlink, Starlan 10
, but for a complete list contact .....

Yes there is, the newest version of Kermit has BAPI support ( Bridge
Aplication Program Interface) which is compatible with the more
familiar INT14, But !!!!! it is not Full Screen, so you will have
a problem here.
Hewlett Packard's ARPA services 2.0 has a kermit copy with BAPI in it
We are testing this at this moment. (some things good, a lot of it is
not).

Subject: Telnet 3179 for MSDOS

There are two reasonably good solutions available:

1. NCSA/Telnet: This is a free-ware package available from Brad Clements
at Clarkson University. (I think there are a couple of other sources,
too.) In terms of function, I think it's the best one around. However,
it only supports 3278-x terminals, hence no graphics. (See below.)
Contact Brad Clements (bkc@omnigate.clarkson.edu or bkc@clgw.bitnet)
for information on how to get the package. (Note: The current version
of the TN3270.EXE program, which does the 3270 emulation and which you'll
need, has a bug. Make sure you get the version labelled
CUTCP/CUTE:2.2TN/TC-B, which, so far, is a beta test version, but which
     seems to work well.)

2. PC/TCP+ from FTP Software, Inc.: This one will cost you about $450 per
copy in small quantities. Site licenses for larger quantities can lower
the cost significantly. PC/TCP+ is also a very good product, although in
a few areas I don't think it's as good as NCSA/Telnet. It too emulates a
     3278-x terminal, so no graphics.

The MITEK Corp. has developed a 3192-G emulator which sits on top of PC/TCP+
and gives you full color graphics capabilities. I haven't tested it yet, so
I'm only passing on what I've heard. Also, I understand that MITEK intends to
port the package to other PC-based TCP/IP packages, including probably
NCSA/Telnet, which would be terrific. The local MITEK representative
(Washington, DC area) is Bill Cate, (301)-670-2806. I'm sure he can put you
in contact with a rep in your area.

I believe that Mitek makes one that runs on top of PC/TCP from FTP Software.
It may have another version that works with PC-NFS from Sun.

The TELNET type software that you need is called TN3270. I use the Macintosh
version all the time. It works very well. It is freeware, developed at Brown
University by their Computing and Information Services. I have been told
that the PC version works equally well. It supports the 3Com 501 card as well
as others. If the Ethernet controller to SNA is defined properly (this I have
been told, but I do not know first hand) then your PC becomes a full blown
3279 terminal capable of all the graphics of a 3279 terminal but at Ethernet
speeds. The Kermit that you ask about I have, but it does not work with any
of the Ethernet cards that I can get my hands on, so I can not say if it works
or not. Talk at you later.

I have just begun looking into the same type of set up and this is what
I know so far. One of the most common software packages used for TCP/IP
and elnet communications is apparently NCSA Telnet for the PC and is public
domain software. Your computer center should have a copy. Common hardware
are EtherCard (s) from Western Digital.

Good luck,

Subject: Re: TCP/IP and logical devices

Interesting question. Making a TCP solution for this is clearly
possible; it's a mere matter of programming. We are getting some
call for local printing on an IBM PC from CMS over the Ethernet,
since some have enjoyed such facilities in Yale's Y-TERM serial
terminal emulator product. At first, I said, "No way, not all
Telnet machines have a common way to get to their printers, so
it has to be a custom job for each kind of desk located machine."

That's true, but there is the example of the Brown Univ. tn3270
for the Mac which also supports upload/download/print from inside
the Telnet session. I know of no such thing for the IBM PC, but
if you hear of one, please let me know. I suspect that the Brown
sources would be available for porting to a PC based tn3270 if
someone were ready to do the programming. We might even be able
to join a consortium to create such a thing if such were formed.

Does anyone else see a need for such an enhancement of current
networking software?

We would also like both the Mac and the PC to have telnet code
with similar facilities for use with Unix based servers.

We would also be interested in finding a telnet which (like
tn3270) looked like one terminal to the distant host but used
the current terminal definition on the local host so the odd
user with a Wombat 4000 terminal need only get the local host
to recognize hir terminal type. Our present need is for one
which looks like a VT100 to the distant host. Know of one?

You'll get more and better answers to a query like this on the PCIP list
(pcip@udel.edu; send to pcip-request@udel.edu to subscribe).

The general answer is, yes, you want to go with another version of TCP/IP
for the PC. Several good commercial implementations exist; we're using
PC/TCP from FTP Software (send to info@ftp.com). They support more than
20 different boards with their own drivers, and many more with public
domain or manufacturer-supplied drivers. Several public domain
implementations also exist, such as the one from NCSA. Support for the
many different boards is being provided more and more by a driver, often
supplied by the manufacturer, which supports one of several specs for
interfacing to the applications. Two of the predominant specs are FTP
Software's packet driver spec, and NDIS.

This is just an overview, and probably just enough to whet your appetite.
Happy hunting!

So, it does support Ethernet.

We purchased a 3179G emulator from a company in the U.S. which runs on top
of FTP Software's PC/TCP. It works *very* well indeed. The 3179 graphics is
implemented over a Telnet connection to VM TCP/IP. Kind of expensive, but
works great! No changes to VM TCP/IP needed.

Funny you should bring this subject up. At UMD, we are in the process of
doing this. We have modified the MD-PC/IP code to include support for
printers. Unlike the Peter's code from Brown (who does printing from
within the 3270 data stream), we have taken the approach of making the
PC support a network printing protocol as a server. This allows it to be
used with things other than IBMs and also allows it to be used with IBM
environments other than VM. Specifically, our total package addresses
printing from CICS under MVS. We are experimenting with several approaches
for this. I'm writing a VTAM application that converts the LU1 or LU3
data stream into something that can be sent out via a TCP/IP network
printer protocol. We are also looking about SNA gateway solutions from
DEC and doing something on a RT or RS/6000 using AIX. The network printing
protocol we use is NOT LPR. LPR is a turkey protocol. Our current work
is oriented towards a UMD modified MDQS system (which was originally
written for Unix systems at BRL). We have developed a new network
protocol for the MDQS system (which is basically a queue management system)
that is more generic and not Unix specific like LPR is. It has a very
SMTPish flavor and is fairly easy to implement. We are cleaning up the
Unix version and will be making it available in the not too distant
future. My NETPRINT program for VM already supports this protocol.

We are working on an IBM3179 emulation using X11.

It will show up on expo.lcs.mit.edu sometime this fall; it's not in shape
for distribution yet.

Status:
-------

- Graphics emulation works nice with GDDM and SAS
- emulates 3179 model 2,3,4 and 5; no graphics and extended attributes
  on model 4 or 5
- extended attributes support
- X Resource manager used for keyboard mapping and defaults
- currently only one font based on Robert Viduya's 3270tool.
- no programmed symbol sets (yet).
- based on other tn3270's, so usual copyright restrictions apply

Platforms:
----------
- development on DecStation 3100 and Hewlett-Packard 9000/835
- works on Interactive/386; will work better when the Interactive
  X11R4 libraries are out
- `port' to SCO Unix planned

Prerequisites:
--------------
- X11 Release 4 libraries: libX.a, libXt.a, libXaw.a
- BSD sockets
- host connection works via IBM-TCP and the telnet3270 protocol. This means
you need FAL or something equivalent.

Plans (in order of importance):
-------------------------------
- some graphics emulation are still unimplemented
- X11 Cut+Paste
- APL Support
- multiple fonts (needed for small X screens)

       IBM 3270 Coax cards
connecting to our IBM 4361 running VM/SP CMS
with GDDM graphics supported, as well as
        SAS/GRAPH.

We have found GRAPH-TEK to work on some clone PCs (GATEWAY) where IBM's
ENTRY LEVEL, WORKSTATION, and EMULATION software failed.

(All of our PC's are coax attached using IBM cards.)

We are not running ETHERNET.

I have no connection with Teknigraphics, just enjoy using it (on my

Wir haben bei der DLR in OP zwei Produkte getestet, um }ber TCP/IP
von PS/2-Modellen ans MVS oder VM/CMS zu kommen: einmal IBM TCP/IP for
the PC und dann XONDOS (IBM X-Windows for DOS).

Ungermann Bass NICps/2 getestet.
