RTTY DX Notes 1of3 4/27/91

RTTY DX Notes for week ending 27th April 1991
BID: $KT7H116
Part 1 of 3.

I never cease to be amazed by the apparent lack of knowledge by some
of the people who operate their black boxes. The SARTG AMTOR Contest
last weekend was a prime example of this syndrome. Some operators,
(for some strange reason, mainly Europeans) did not know there was a
long and a short path from point A to point B. Others did not realize
what their transmit delay was for. One operator even went to 90 ms
delay to work long distances. He could not be told that he should
have been at 10 ms. He said that he never uses that delay as he could
not work the locals. Oh Boy! With FEC some people were not leaving
phasing signals from startup, then only giving their callsign three
times, and getting no replies. One does not wonder why, no phasing
signals, no receiver lock up. But one must congratulate the SARTG on
their initiative to organize this contest, and hope that it will
continue for years to come, with maybe some small changes. Us chaps
in the antipodes had a rough time with some of the above operating.
not that we were all perfect at this end either.

Our thanks this week go to DJ3IW and the DB0SPC Cluster, I5FLN,
JA1BLV, LZ2BE, NT3B, OZ3TQ, SM5EIT, TG9VT, VK2EG, W2FG and the
Tri-State DX Cluster, WB2CGL and WH6I. Thank you all for your very
helpful notes.
