GEOMAGNETIC STORM ALERT
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Issued: 22:00 UT, 17 June
-------------
ATTENTION:
A minor geomagnetic storm is presently in progress. Minor to major
geomagnetic storming has been observed over the last three hours. The
interplanetary shockwave from the last large class X12/3B flare arrived at
10:18 UT on 17 June. Activity should continue at minor to major storm levels
over the next 12 to 18 hours, afterwhich a return to more dormant levels
should materialize.
The Low Latitude Auroral Activity Watch has been extended to 18 June.
Activity may become favorable for auroral observations over the central U.S..
There is a slight chance for visible auroral activity in the lower latitudes.
However, storming may become increasingly dormant over the evening hours if
this present disturbance does not persist. The UT day of 18 June will be the
last day for possible significant storm periods and auroral observations over
the lower latitudes. Conditions will improve noticably on 19 June and
auroral activity will be confined to the high latitude regions.
HF degradation has been observed over the past 12 to 18 hours. A minor
ionospheric storm is in progress which has lowered MUFs and increased levels
of distortion. These conditions should persist until later in the UT day of
18 June, when conditions should begin to improve. The PCA event over the
polar regions has almost ended and will officially be ended by 19 June.
There remains a possibility for VHF backscatter communications over the
high and middle latitude regions for 18 June. Conditions are now fairly
favorable for localized VHF backscatter over limited areas.
