Subject: encapsulation takes off
This IP-in-IP encapsulation stuff is taking off faster than I expected.
I was about to post the relevant excerpt of my routing table, but I wanted
to check first that nobody would object.
Assuming there are no problems in making it public, anyone who sets up a
gateway to his/her local AMPRNET segment could just send the relevant
routing table entry to this list, and everybody else running an
encapsulation router would just add it to their routing table. This would
constitute a manual form of link-state routing...

Subject: Net in windows findings
I got my net.exe running in Windows 3.0.
I ended up running windows in standard or real mode intstead of
enhanced. For seem reason I cannot use enhanced mode.
I even tried making a .PIF file and running
my net.exe in standard mode with the windows in
enhanced mode but it didn't work.
Thansk to all those who replied with suggestions.

Subject: Using POP
Tom Clark asked about POP, so I thought I would send this to the
whole group.
How to use POP in NOS
---------------------
The HOST should establish a 'POPUSERS.' file in root with the following
format:
username:password:
username:password:
etc.
There should be an entry for each user of your POP system. We generally
use call letters for both entries. I.E. wa3dsp:wa3dsp:
The HOST must also start the pop server 'start pop' which should go in
your autoexec.
Each USER must add the following lines to there autoexec:
'pop mailbox CALL'
Where CALL is the name of the mailbox on the host
to retrieve mail from. The /spool/CALL.txt file.
Usually the users call.
'pop mailhost hostname'
This specifies what host to pop from.
I.E. 'pop mailhost wa3dsp.ampr.org'
'pop userdata user password'
This data should match the data in the
hosts pop user file.
I.E. 'pop userdata wa3dsp wa3dsp'
'pop timer 3600'
For stations that are on for extended periods
and receive there mail via pop from a mailhost
this timer must be set to interrogate the host
on a regular basis. Alternatively they could
do a 'pop kick' to check for mail. Time should
be set to probably no less than 1/2 hour on a
radio circuit.
'pop kick'
This should be entered at the end of your
autoexec to check for mail from your mailhost
at startup.
So the autoexec entries would look like this for USER w3iwi...
pop mailbox w3iwi
pop mailhost wa3dsp.ampr.org
pop userdata w3iwi w3iwi
pop timer 3600
pop kick
and HOST wa3dsp's autoexec...
start pop
HOST wa3dsp's popusers. in root....
w3iwi:w3iwi:
A few other points...
If a pop users wants mail to be delivered to the host for them to pick
up via POP they should enter a 'reply to' field in BM.RC to direct
mail to the host and not back to them.
POP is a very good service for Amateur Radio. It is especially good
when a flood of messages are sent out to all users. This is a condition
that often causes crashes on memory marginal systems using SMTP. Also
alot of unnecessary traffic is sent out to stations that are not on the
air. With POP the user asks for and gets mail. This is naturally a random
operation. Lowering channel congestion and NOS memory usage.

Subject: OOPS, a blunder.
Hello All,
In my message to Tony at hawai i wrote that the IP address in the ifconfig
was not important. THAT IS WRONG, Just the Opposite.
That is the IP address used to define the from address.
So if the default IP addfress is not the IP address for the carrier
IP address you have to set it with IFCONFIG.
Like tony's ip address is 44.14..1.2 and his ethernet (to the Internet)
is 128.171.41.250 he HAS to (after attaching ai0) use
ifconfig ai0 ip 128.171.41.250
I was wondering why i could not get something back from hawai. (apart of the
fact that during our wake time it is their sleep time....)
Sorry for the confussion.
Regards, Gerard.

No objections here. Could you also please CC your routing table to
gateways@uhm.ampr.org? By the way, mind if I put you on that mailing
list?

Subject: BCC compile
Gerard,
Perhaps you could help me. I am trying to compile your code with
Borland C++ 2.0 version. I started out with TC++ 1.0 and it bombed
at the ax25user.c routine. I then upgraded to the BC++ 2.0 and it
bombed in main.c at your 'Version2' addition. It appears that you
declare it an external within the main and a function down lower in
main does not have a declaration. Anyhow I took the extern declaration
out of main all together and put it in global.h right next to the version
extern declaration. OK all fine in compile now, but I get a fixup error
at the final link of nos.exe. Any ideas??
The changes to the makefile were to call the bcc instead of tc compiler
and to append .c to the c source. BCC assumes .cpp

Subject: securing mail on a nos?
Hello,
Is there any way to prevent an account from sending mail? I am
setting up a nos that will have a direct connection to the internet
and I am worried about the potential for abuse with the anonymous
and guest accounts. Is there any way besides putting an authorization
of 128 on the account, to solve this problem? I don't mind if people
send mail to other users on the system but I want to know who they
are before they can send mail to other sites.

Subject: PA0GRI NOS version 0604
Hello out there, there are some more problems with the GRI NOS,
When someone is connected to the MBOX, and uses the "G" command, he will
never receive anything untill he breaks with a "^X" !
The same goes for the Net/Rom connect command ?
Let's hope, that Gerard creates a new version, because the GRI NOS version
can do more and is nicer to work with then the G1EMM version 1.6, witch I am
using now.
Bye Bye and greetings from Holland

In regard to my POP message...
If I said /spool/file.txt that was wrong - it should be /spool/mail/file.txt
or the same place that smtp puts mail delivered to your system. It should
respond at the user end with a no messages or that it received messages or
access denied if the username/pw or wrong or not defined.

Subject: PA0GRI notes
In the 0604 version of PA0GRI I noticed two things that I had not
before. One is that when FTP'ing out to another system and entering
a username (anonymous) and then at the PW prompt just typing a <CR>
reverts you immediately back to the local FTP prompt but does not
complete the login. You have to enter 'user xxxx' again and then at
least one charater for a PW. I like users to use ther call letters
for anonymous login's for logging purposes but It should allow a
non-PW to be entered. Maybe this was intentional. If so then it
should keep requesting PW until you enter something rather than
leaving you at the ftp prompt and not logged in. I know on Milnet
some ftp logins have messages that request a certain login/pw.
Maybe we could have the capability for an ftp login message. How is
this done? If you login anonymous it responds with a message and a
requested PW.
The other thing I notice that I have not before (at least not that I
am aware of after using G1EMM for over a year) is that services seem
to get stopped. I had it happen to FTP and POP. To reactivate I have
to do a 'stop xxx' and then a 'start xxx' or restart the program. Is
anyone else noticing this?

Subject: anonymous mailings
Concern has been raised in NEDA (Northeast Digital Association) about
tcp/ip due to someone sending a mail message over packet from the
anonymous account on a tcp node. Is it possible in NOS to deny a
particular user the ability to send mail over packet while still
allowing him to send to mailboxes on that node?
I guess that question would have to go for ftp, telnet, etc as well.
