The switch had more to do with a **SERIOUS** increase in price than anything. There's a little more info about that at: http://www.oit.duke.edu/itac/minutes/031397.html bbnplanet is anther major provider, but the general consensus is that they're worse than sprintlink. MCI has a great number of interconnect points (i.e. don't go through MAE-EAST to get to the other major providers), whereas BBNPlanet and other providers (even SprintLink to a point) have a significantly lesser amount. The problems that INFURIATE me though, are the ones like the one posted by Dr. Norstad that for the folks at NCSU, I'll briefly mention. try getting a packet to one of the two www.info.apple.com servers: Name: www.info.apple.com Addresses: 204.96.16.10, 206.160.172.3 Both are pingable/etc. from my internet provider back in Chicago, while for DAYS now, the 206.* address has been unreachable via sprintlink. Their routing table must be so messed up, I don't even want to think about it. Fact: Sprintlink is not meeting the RTP Universities' needs. Question: what can be economically done to meet those needs? The issue is as much monetary as it is based on quality. --jay ----- Jay Kamm * jwk3@duke.edu * http://www.duke.edu/~jwk3/ Creative Services Manager, The Chronicle http://chronicle.duke.edu/ Un-official Macintosh Biggot =v) a.k.a.
