If you've been waiting around for Window '95, you may have heard OS/2 advocates talk about how the majority of user interface enchancements coming in Win9[567....] merely allow it to mimic what's already in the OS/2 WorkPlace Shell. IBM Employee Written Software has come out with the next best thing: They have created a robust WorkPlace Shell that replaces your Windows Program Manager and Task Manager. It gives you the look and feel of the OS/2 Desktop, SOM Objects, mappings of OS/2 Objects to Windows applets (the OS/2 Drives object is mapped to the File Manager applet), settings notebooks, drag and drop, and lots of the extra features tied into OS/2 uses of the right mouse button. If you are considering an operating system upgrade in the next few years, and really want to honestly evaluate OS/2, let me suggest you download and try WorkPlace Shell for Windows. It will give you a chance to learn the feel and landscape of the OS/2 desktop without having to leap into installing OS/2 immediately. The kit comes with automatic installation, along with complete instructions for manual installation, and de-installation. If you are going to be migrating a user group to the OS/2, the leading 32-bit desktop operating system, this would be a useful tool to starting training users on so they can slowly come up to speed with what they'll get with OS/2. You would want to go from driving a horse and buggy to a Formula 1 racer too fast. You can FTP WorkPlace Shell for Windows from ftp.cdrom.com. The program is in /os2/incoming, and is named wpshell.zip. You will need PKUNZIP 2.04e or later, or freeware Unzip. The zip is just over 500K, and installed takes up 350K RAM, and 600K drive space. --- Jon Austin jaustin@acpub.duke.edu Birthplace of 'USENET' "I'd rather have a frontal lobotomy than use Windows" War is peace Freedom is slavery Bill Gates <--> Big Brother
