Unfortuantely, older equipment is generally better for faster connections. This equipment is less likely to interfere with an analog modem. The problem is that newer areas tend to have multiplexers that put multiple copper lines onto a fiber cable. Problem is that this equipment often will reduce the speed to 28,800 bps. These multiplexers also prevent you from getting xDSL. > Does anyone in the Triangle area ever get a fast connection to any ISP? > > What is frustrating is that the slow connections (and inability to ever get > a Duke connection) is seriously impacting my work. I can't get ADSL (not in > my area) or cable modem. What do you mean "inability to get a Duke connection"? Can't you subscribe to Duke's ISP service? If ADSL does come to your area, that would be your best option as I believe the GTE/Duke ADSL rates are quite good. Read triangle.online-access for much more on this subject.
