I have a 100% NEW Zoom Fax/Modem(external, 14400bps) with v.42bis and MNP5
compression for sale. I haven't even opened the package yet. Here is the
story.

I bought it at Duke computer store in January, and had used it until it got
screwed up due to a severe thunderstorm two weeks ago. I sent it back to the
Zoom Telephonics, and while waiting for them to send me back a new one, I
bought a new, faster 28800bps modem. Yesterday, I received this whole new
package from Zoom Telephonics, and haven't opened it. I expected to receive a
main unit only, because I returned the main unit only, without cable,
software, and other stuff. But they sent me a whole NEW PACKAGE, which sells
at $135 now at Duke computer store. It contains several other cool stuff, like
Delphi, AOL and CompuServe free offers. Also it has 7 years warranty and
WinFax LITE, DosFax LITE, and COMit for Dos and Windows. I had used it for
several months without any problem, so you'll be happy with it as well as I
was. I'm thinking of selling it at $100. Once again, it's not opened!

I had a US Robotics modem fried by a t-storm a few years ago and had the
same experience. I think it is just cheaper for them to toss in a whole new
modem rather than trying to repair an old one. How much do those cards
really cost to manufacture, anyway?

This serves as another reminder to users: you are *much* more likely to
get a shock to your PC through the phone line than through the power
line. Either get a surge protector that includes a phone line protector, or
unplug the phone line after each use (and defnintely unplug when tstorms
are around or when you leave town).
