DUKE DRAMA PROGRAM ANNOUNCES NEW SEASON
RUNNING GAMUT FROM SHAKESPEARE TO GUARE

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University Drama Program director Richard
Riddell says the program's new season of plays will "appeal to
theater-goers who appreciate a wide variety of dramatic styles and
periods and enjoy being challenged and entertained." The roster
includes Shakespeare's "Measure For Measure," a re-telling of a
Greek myth and a contemporary comedy, as well as new works.
"We talked to faculty and students about what kinds of plays
they are interested in seeing and what they'd like to participate
in, and we came up with a season that responds to those interests,"
Riddell said in an interview. "We'll have both student and faculty
directors who are very committed to specific visions of these plays
-- that's definitely a key to successful productions."
The first production of the fall will be "King Ubu," a late
19th century French farce written by Alfred Jarry and directed by
drama faculty member Rafael Lopez-Barrantes, who directed last
year's striking "Kaspar." The production, which portrays the rise
to the Polish throne of Pere Ubu, will be staged in Sheafer
Laboratory Theater at the Bryan Center Oct. 6-9.
John Guare's dark and wacky comedy, "The House of Blue
Leaves," follows "King Ubu" with performances Nov. 4-5 and Nov. 10-
13 in the R.J. Reynolds Industries Theater in the Bryan Center.
Faculty member Jeff Storer will direct this American comedy by the
author of "Six Degrees of Separation." The comic tour de force
explores the life of a middle-aged zoo attendant; his mistress; his
wife, Bananas; their son (AWOL from the army and carrying a bomb)
and a group of nuns who drop in on the day the Pope is making his
first visit to New York.
"The Love of the Nightingale" by English author Timberlake
Wertenbaker will be staged for the first time in North Carolina
Dec. 1-4 at Sheafer Laboratory Theater in the Bryan Center. Junior
Ariel Nazryan will direct the re-telling of the classic Greek myth
of Philomele, in which an act of aggression leads to a cycle of
retribution.
The first production of the spring semester will be "The Model
Apartment," written by American playwright Donald Margulies and
directed by drama student Hanny Landau. Slated for Feb. 16-19, the
funny and poignant play focuses on Lola and Max, survivors of the
Holocaust, who retire from New York to Florida to deal with events
of the past.
Second-year faculty member Devon Allen will direct a mainstage
production of Shakespeare's "Measure For Measure" in the Reynolds
Industries Theater Feb. 24-25 and
March 2-5.
And in the drama program's tradition of staging new plays, a
festival of new works by Duke students, faculty, staff, alumni and
guest professionals will be featured in "Theater '95: New Works for
the Stage." The festival will run March 31-April 23 at various
theaters across campus. The drama program will accept and review
scripts during fall semester -- the deadline for submissions is
Nov. 19 -- and will announce the festival lineup in January.
A brochure with schedules and prices, season tickets and sign-
ups forms for participation in "Friends of Drama" are available by
calling Stephen Staudigl at the Duke Drama Program, (919) 684-
2306.
Individual tickets are available in advance from Page Box
Office, (919) 684-4444.
