DUKE MBA STUDENTS OFFER FREE CONSULTING SERVICES
DURHAM, N.C. -- The Fuqua Student Consulting Group
wants to help small businesses in the Triangle.
MBA students at Duke University's Fuqua School of
Business volunteer their time to help small companies solve
business problems through the Fuqua Student Consulting
Group. They aid small businesses that are more than a year
old and cannot afford to pay professional consulting fees.
The group has served the local business community for
the last 14 years with consulting activities such as
computerizing accounting systems, analyzing cash flow,
studying management problems, inventory control, operations,
performing market surveys and developing marketing
strategies.
"Students are eager to apply the ideas and skills they
learned in courses to real-world problems," said William A.
Sax, director of the group and Fuqua executive-in-residence.
"Companies benefit from the practical advice they receive
from our students, who average over four years of business
experience before they entered Fuqua."
Sax, who worked in the oil industry for over 30 years,
begins his eighth year of teaching at Fuqua this fall. He
has worked with more than 75 companies through this program.
He evaluates potential clients to determine if their
needs match students' experience, interest and ability.
Once selected, the business owner meets with a student team
to outline the business problems to be solved.
Students begin the consulting project in late September
and hold an additional six to eight meetings with the client
during the school year. Sax regularly reviews their
progress until they successfully complete the project with
formal oral and written presentations in April. All
contacts and information are kept confidential.
Sax is scheduling consulting projects for the fall
semester. Interested business people should complete an
application form, which they can obtain by writing him at
the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University, Durham, N.C.
27708 or by calling 660-7752. Sax will mail a brochure
about the program with the application. Application
deadline is Aug. 31.
