DUKE UNIVERSITY'S ANNUAL FOUNDERS' DAY CONVOCATION
TO FEATURE TALK BY CHANDLER, PRESENTATION OF AWARDS
DURHAM, N.C. -- John W. Chandler, a former president of
the Association of American Colleges and former chairman of the
Duke University Board of Trustees, will speak at Duke's Founders'
Day Convocation on Thursday, Dec. 8, at 4:30 p.m. in Duke Chapel.
Chandler, a Duke alumnus who has been a Duke trustee since
1985, will give the major address during the ninth annual service,
which celebrates the 1924 signing by industrialist-philanthropist
James B. Duke of the Indenture of Trust that created the
university.
Chandler, a former Williams College president who now is
a consultant assisting with college presidential searches, headed
the presidential search process that led to the board's selection
of current Duke President Nannerl O. Keohane. Chandler holds B.D.
and Ph.D. degrees from Duke.
In addition to Chandler's talk, the Founders' Day
Convocation will include Keohane's presentation of the University
Medal for Distinguished Meritorious Service -- the university's
highest service award. Last year's recipients were long-time
university marshal Pelham Wilder and Samuel Dubois Cook, president
of Dillard University.
According to Wilder, organizer of annual Founders' Day
events, Keohane also will announce the recipient of this year's
University Scholar/Teacher Award, and the Humanitarian Service
Award, which is sponsored by Duke Campus Ministry.
The Duke University Alumni Association's top two awards --
the Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award and the
association's Distinguished Alumni Award -- also will be presented.
Other award recipients to be recognized will include
Trinity College Distinguished Teachers Robert Carson of psychology
and Janice Radway of literature; Robert B. Cox Teaching Award
winner Bruce Kohorn of botany; recipients of the Lublin
Distinguished Awards for Teaching, Wendy Luttrell of cultural
anthropology and the Center for Teaching and Learning, and Kristine
Stiles of art and art history; and Howard Johnson Teaching Award
recipient Helen "Sunny" Ladd of public policy and economics.
Students to be recognized during the special service
include Angier B. Duke Scholars, Benjamin N. Duke Scholars, James
B. Duke Graduate Fellows, Reginald Howard Scholars, Trinity
Scholars, Faculty Scholars, Alumni Scholars, the Craven Scholars
and The Duke Endowment Fellows.
The three employee recipients of the Presidential Awards
-- Walter Carter of facilities planning and management, Leslie Hill
of the hospital emergency department and Carolyn Jarrell of the
graduate school office -- will be recognized, along with honorable
mention awardees Janice Anderson, John Drake Jr., Tina Gaither,
Craig Heinly, Tony Jenkins and Juanita Lemmons.
Founders' week events will conclude with a special worship
service in Duke Chapel on Sunday morning, Dec. 11. The preacher
this year will be Professor Hans Hillerbrand, chairman of the Duke
department of religion.
