DUKE MEETS GOAL; RAISES $500,000 FOR UNITED WAY

DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke-United Way Partnership charity drive
raised a record $500,604 for Durham and state charities this year,
meeting its ambitious goal and surpassing last year's total by 59
percent, campaign officials reported.
They credited the drive's success to the more than 400 Duke
volunteers who helped coordinate the five-week drive and thousands
of university employees who contributed to the annual fund-raising
effort.
"This is a marvelous result," said Duke President Nannerl O.
Keohane. "It's been a great effort on the part of many people and
it demonstrates once again how strongly we at Duke care about our
community. I thank everyone for their generosity."
The university's drive was part of a Durham campaign that
raised more than $4 million this year, an 11 percent increase over
1993. United Way officials said that was one of the largest
increases in North Carolina.
"I think Duke's increase was the key to our very successful
campaign this year," said Richard J. Kaspar, chairman of the 1994
United Way campaign for greater Durham. "It demonstrated once again
the important relationship between Duke and the community. This is
not Duke the institution; it is Duke the people. That's very
important."
A total of 3,604 members of the Duke community contributed to
the 1994 Duke-United Way Partnership, a 63 percent increase over
1993, according to Robert G. Winfree, associate vice chancellor for
health affairs at the medical center and a co-chairman of the Duke
campaign.
He said Duke hospital employees registered an 80 percent
increase in participation with 977 donors contributing $102,725.
The hospital's 1993 total was $50,088.
The rest of the medical center had a 47 percent increase in
donors to 1,051 with $162,388 raised -- 36 percent more than last
year.
Winfree said the faculty and staff at other areas of the
university recorded a 33 percent increase in participation with
1,180 donors contributing $201,360 -- up 50 percent from 1993.
In addition, Winfree said students, Duke retirees and emeriti
faculty contributed $34,123 to the 1994 campaign.
A total of 37 Durham area and state charitable organizations
were included in this year's fund-raising effort. Added to the 1994
campaign in addition to the traditional United Way agencies were
the Durham Arts Council, Habitat for Humanity, Community Shelter
for HOPE and Crimestoppers.
The campaign was kicked off Sept. 26 with a fair attended by
more than 2,000 employees, students and faculty members. Free food
and soft drinks were served by deans and administrators and
agencies represented by the campaign explained what they do and how
funds raised by the drive will help community residents.
In addition to Winfree, other co-chairmen of Duke's 1994 drive
were Paul Brummett, director of material support; Laney Funderburk,
director of alumni affairs; and Shirley "Red" Wilson, director of
human relations at the medical center.
