GREAT BRITAIN EXPLAINED http://www.great-britons.co.uk/ EVENING NEWS An idiot's guide to the history of Britain CONFUSED? You will be if you nip along to The Stand this evening for the first in a series of spoof lectures examining British contributions to history, the arts, science and . . . er, sandwich shops. Originally conceived as a response to the 100 Greatest Britons poll, Great Britain Explained - featuring stand-ups Colin Ramone, Ben Chester and Colin "Simpfeld" Simpson - boasts a pretty bold title. Do they really hope to explain all the political and social history of this sceptred isle in a little over an hour? Well, sort of. "This show is about the British Isles from a viewpoint of complete ignorance and stupidity," explains Ramone, "introducing the British Isles as comprising of three countries - Scotland, Northern Ireland and England and Wales." So no in-depth discussion on the political ramifications of the anti-war demonstrations then? "Definitely not!" retorts Ramone. "We're comedians - for us, funny is instinctive, making a point isn't." Point taken. Yet despite his protests, there are elements of the show that at least touch on having a little more to say. The middle section of the show, for example, promises to examine why the Channel Islands are so keen to revel in their "murky past as Nazi collaborators". Spoof letters are a recurring theme. Ramone wrote to such luminaries as the Archbishop of Canterbury, Iain Duncan Smith and Billy Ray Cyrus to ask if they would open his new sandwich shop. But only one person replied - chairman of Microsoft, Bill Gates! "We're all waiting to see if he turns up tonight," says Ramone. "He said he's got quite a full schedule, but we think he's just stalling." Great Britain Explained, The Stand, June 4th, July 2nd, 9pm, 0131-558 7272
