If there is an easier way to install something I will take it, if not I use the sources, precisely because I want to run Unix, not spend all my time with makefiles. Redhat supply rpm packages for the same reason that Sun supply pkgadd format distributions, to speed up installation and support. If I want to add GCC to my Ultra2 in work I use a pkgadd FSF distribution, maybe I'm just lazy or maybe I have better things to do with my time. As for getting your hands dirty, there are many ways of doing that without compiling. "Each to their own."
