Let me say one thing to you : there is no one that can really tell you wich distribution is best for you.
I would suggest that you get one of the sets that have multiple versions of linux on it (Like the Infomagick 6 CD
set ). Try installing one version if it works for you then you stick with that version.

If you have not alot of unix experience I would suggest you try RedHat or Caldera. Because they have a tech support
department available and are more or less targetting the New user.

I understand that PCW (Personal Computer World, a .uk magazine) April 1997
will have RedHat4.1 on the front cover disk. I am not sure if it is
available in .de though.

Not the April 97 cover date -- that issue appeared first week of March,
as seems to be usual in UK magazine publishing. Expect to see this
appearing in the next issue, cover date May, publication first week of
April.

If you are Edinburgh based I could possibly drop of a copy of the linux
Developer's resource(Sept 96), which contains slackware and redhat. I think
there has been newer release of LDR.

email me privatly at ism@dirk.demon.co.uk

Oops, sorry - I suppose that there is some logic in this - calling the issue
published beginning of April the _May_ issue. I presume that they pay their
staff in the same way :-)

Anyway, I have installed RH4.1 and am reasonably happy with it.... I
installed "straight out of the box".

I have switched from Linux FT to Redhat. The RPM package install
system was worth the switch for me. I am no programmer so installing
an RPM package beats compiling the source anyday. Redhat also seem to
be pretty quick to have updates available on their site and its many
mirrors.

Just my 2p's worth.

quite like red hat linux, it is very easy to install. i don't know where you can get it in britain, but there is a nice web site:
http://www.uk.linux.org
they have a list of distributions and where to get them from

compiling the source shouldn't be too much of a problem, and it always
seems strange when people say 'I want to run unix' but then don't want
to get their hands dirty.. compiling programs is IMHO a part of
administering a unix system, you get to tweak things and actually see
how things fit together, which makes it easier for you to fix if they
go wrong. I rarely need to look at the source, much less understand
it!
