What time has taught me, or rather let me observe _others_ learning, mostly, fortunately, is that although it is quite clearly right and necessary to fib in certain circumstances, as unsurprising as life is full of grey areas, too much bullshit results in you disappearing up your own bum eventually -- it comes back to get you! The same goes for businesses, although it can be useful strategy, i.e. complete and absolute honesty really doesn't always help I agree, if you do it too much it'll always come back to get you and eat you up! The line is a very fine one indeed. IMHO the issue is balance; esp. avoiding the need to have to fib for trivial things... And *that* is why things such as this annoy me so much.... ultimately it's bloody unnecessary! It's just part of the old boys business bullshit game something which when which too prevelant, it seems to me, in the long term appears to be the cause of problems and disfunctionality within many businesses. Although absolute honesty is dangerous, so is persistant bullshit! >lying is of no use in any position above that of janitor. In fact, there >was a recentish survey that showed children that learn to lie are usually >more sociable as adults than those that do not. I don't have the reference >for that tho, which is a shame, so you'll just have to accept my assurance >that I'm not lying! If I remember correctly... it was about the age at which children develop the ability to deceive or lie, originally this was believed to be about 4 or 5, but it turns out it varies quite a bit more than expected? Quite possibly, quite probably, some of those who learn to do it quite young do better socially. But this is not surprising though is it, as the ability to fib is quite an advanced skill, and if one develops the ability young it would also be suggestive of a reasonable intellect. And yes, a complete _inability_ to fib would probably be representative of a developmental problem and *is* likely to cause a whole lot of problems in life. At least tact is often a necessity in life! BUT! Being able to fib though, does not mean that you should; similarly, knowing that I have the ability to do so, does not mean that I normally choose to do so. I think of it as an occasional necessary evil, but I remember that it *is* never the less a form of evil when I do have to do it. *8-( So! Ultimately, it is something to best minimise the necessity for, surely? If so, then surely it really should not be necessary here? Anyway, it seems that the 'turning around and biting you up the bum' bit for this is already happening. As I've said before would happen, and has now been demonstrated by replies in the group from some of the folk who are involved in the business and are not students, it would have appeared to have already pissed some regular genuine people off. And this is not surprising given the 'open' nature of the development of the operating system in general and hence the type of people likely to have got involved in this operating system, that many of them might have an almost irrational annoyance towards too much bullshit. I certainly have. To quote as closely as I can a rare example of a surprisingly clued up statement from an MP, in refence to the changes she has observed in business, especially now within IT... ...where previously [undisclosed/withheld] "knowledge was power" ...now "shared knowledge is power". Businesses are going to have to learn to partly adapt to that, or die, as the later attitude is often demonstrating a shockingly strong ability to succeed where the former fails. But each to their own opinion anyway... ...that's my little irrational rant on the subject. *8-) Sorry for stealin' yer bandwidth folks.
