Absolutely. > If so, then surely it really should not be necessary here? No it shouldn't. At the end of the 1980s start of the 1990s I was writing Amiga games with a flatmate of mine at the time. Doing so full time meant I had to ask for housing benefit. What did I do? I put down in the form the truth as I saw it -- I was 'self-employed'. This is analagous to Mark's original desire to be free to put on his registration form 'student'. Did I get the money? Did I hell -- I had to provide two yrs of accounts (how could I? I'd only just started on the project) and so on and so forth before they would stump up. It took me five months of fighting the council, and it completely drained my savings before I wised up: I went in and claimed to be 'unemployed'. I felt guilty about that, as I considered I was employed, but did I get the money? Right away. Saved my bacon even. Did I lie? I think I did. But the question is not whether I think I did, but whether the council thought I did. Turns out that the council considers that I did /not/ lie, and that describing myself as unemployed was accurate. Go figure! My suggestion then is that those who want to go the show -- go. If you put yourself down as a director, let the show organisers decide whether you are a director of a PLC, of a one-man start-up, or a student. Trust me -- they won't bother to make that choice. -- Alistair Mann
