You boys stop fightin! acooke, you agree that if we had an integrated modern mass transit system, fewer people would bother to go to the expense of owning and driving cars in compact cities. I guess you mean people just do it to escape the unpleasantness of riding horrible buses. I agree. FoFP, you don't want to pay for anything you don't use. I hope you're not forgetting the countless pounds you yourself have donated to the road-building and automobile industries through taxes. Actually I don't know if you're a driver or not... If so, congratulations. Drivers make out with more than their share of resources. But perhaps you're not, in which case, congratulations. Pedestrians &cyclists are healthier. On the other hand, they get fleeced, frightened, and occasionally squashed by drivers. In any case, the task at hand is weaning city drivers of their habit. Buses, trams and cycles are the obvious alternatives, given that we want to go faster than walking speed. Imagine all the money that goes into roads and cars going into such an integrated system? It would be cheaper by far. Unfortunately no one would make big bucks, so protest and confrontation is in order. Critical Mass, anyone? ira
