In article <28915@castle.ed.ac.uk> jeremy@castle.ed.ac.uk (Jeremy Henderson) writes: Here at least we agree!! In answer to your earlier question about "what should replace the EC" I propose a 2 stage utopia: 1) The Common Market I forgot that you were a true believer. Every human activity is reduced to economy. Is there no other expression of human beings, like art, culture, moral and social values, no other sorts of interaction? If we have a European (or whatsoever) community we should plan and decide things together (e.g. how to organize transport, how to have a better education,...). No, we shouldn't leave everything to THE MARKET or to people whose only interest is to make profit. 2) Reform of British institutions so that there is no need for Britons to rely on the EC to force the guvmint to do things it ought to do on its own - the "Social Chapter", sensible immigration policy, environmental control etc. Certainly, but you can't escape the fact that this island is a part of Europe: geographically, politically and economically. Euro scepticism will not make this country more independent of European developments it will just reduce your influence on them. And then: due to the changes in the east of Europe we need a strong Europe. Missing the chance of shaping the future now, may result in another era of human suffering - and Yugoslavia was only the beginning. -- Thorsten Altenkirch And there's a hand, my trusty fiere, Laboratory for Foundations And gie's a hand o' thine, of Computer Science And we'll tak a right guid-willie waught University of Edinburgh For auld lang syne!
