My program (compiled with Visual C++ 4.1) ran correctly on WinNT and
Win95. The update with Visual C++ 4.2 generates a violation exception
on WinNT but still runs with Win95.
Where does the trouble could come from?

This is a bug in Visual C++. Use DJGPP in the meantime.
