La verdad es que depende del compilador. Si tiene fases de
optimizacon sofisticadas, entonces probablemente va a generar lo
mismo. Sinon, es posible que el switch sea implementado ms
eficazmente.

Por ejemplo:
----(a.c)---------------------------------
#include <stdio.h>

void f(int x){
    switch(x){
    case 0: printf("cero\n");break;
    case 1: printf("uno\n");break;
    case 2: printf("dos\n");break;
    case 3: printf("tres\n");break;
    case 4: printf("cuatro\n");break;
    case 5: printf("cinco\n");break;
    case 6: printf("seis\n");break;
    case 7: printf("siete\n");break;
    case 8: printf("ocho\n");break;
    case 9: printf("nueve\n");break;
    default:  printf("otro\n");break; }}

void g(int x){

    if(x==0){ printf("cero\n"); }
    else if(x==1){ printf("uno\n"); }
    else if(x==2){ printf("dos\n"); }
    else if(x==3){ printf("tres\n"); }
    else if(x==4){ printf("cuatro\n"); }
    else if(x==5){ printf("cinco\n"); }
    else if(x==6){ printf("seis\n"); }
    else if(x==7){ printf("siete\n"); }
    else if(x==8){ printf("ocho\n"); }
    else if(x==9){ printf("nueve\n"); }
    else{  printf("otro\n"); }}

------------------------------------------
gcc -O3 -c -S -o a.s a.c

se ve en a.s que el switch esta compilado por un nico salto via una
tabla, en lugar, los ifs estan compilados por saltos
succesivos. Promedio, habra un test y un salto con el switch, y 5
tests y 5 saltos con los ifs.

Pero, un compilador un pelin ms inteligente podria realizar que g y f
son equivalente y general el mismo codigo por ambas.
