	no era tan dificil, el propio "col -b" se nombra en `man man`:

$ man man | col -b | tail -21 | head -4
       To  get  a  plain  text  version  of  a  man page, without
       backspaces and underscores, try

         # man foo | col -b > foo.mantxt
