Siento no poder ayudarte en la pregunta concreta que planteas.

Sin embargo tambien realizo backups via FTP (para ciertos servidores no
tengo otro modo). Utilizo "mirrordir" puedes echarle un vistazo y tal
vez resuelva el problema que planteas.
