This newsgroup was created around 1988 and is for the discussion of
topics related to telephony. The name 'ESSUG' means ESS Users Group.
ESS was an analog switching system that was pretty much everywhere when
this group was created, and basically, everybody in the USA was
'users', so... It was kind of a tired little joke.

The orginal ESSUG was a BBS in Santa Ana, California (714/973-2000)
runnig on an apple ][e with a huge 5 mb hard drive, very advanced for
its time.

There were several groups created to replace the BBS: ESSUG Telco,
ESSUG COPT, and ESSUG.misc. ESSUG.COPT's discussed the dreaded
"Customer Owned Pay Telephones" that were surfacing about that time
(and untimately drove users to cell phones because they sucked so
much).

It's still here though most everybody has faded away over the years. If
you have telephony questions, ideas or problems. Try posting them here
and I'll keep an eye on the group and maybe something will happen,
though probably just more viagara spam.
