There are MANY intermediary organizations similar to SCI (such
as
Friends/Quakers, Volunteers for Peace, etc.) through
which one may apply to a workcamp project in Africa, thus
benefiting
in some cases from any special discount arrangements that the
intermediary organization has worked out with the host
organization
in Africa (such as for room and board). Alternatively, often
you
may bypass intermediary organizations and apply DIRECTLY to host
organizations in Africa by writing to them (by regular mail in
addition to E-mail) and requesting the application, schedule of
projects and all details.

"Study in Africa: New Opportunities for American Students"
A new video by: The National Consortium for Study in Africa
Many U.S. undergraduate students and their parents wonder if
they should
consider study abroad in Africa. A growing number of U.S.
universities are
linked with African faculty and universities and are offering
study
seminars in Africa, including some for semester and full
academic year
periods.
This 27 minute video (VHS format) offers an overview of several
U.S.
study programs at campuses in Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia,
Zimbabwe, and South Africa. There are interviews with African
university
faculty, administrators, and students; and the video offers
scenes from
a variety of African university campuses and the cities and
countries
where they are located.
Videos are $20.00 each which includes shipping and handling
within the U.S.
All orders to be shipped outside the U.S. Add $5.00 for shipping
and
handling.

RECOMMENDED PROGRAM
20 Volunteer Projects in Ghana
For details on the 20 Volunteer Projects being organized
in Ghana by the Voluntary Workcamps Association (VOLU; rhymes
with "tofu"), please go to:
http://x24.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=581708075
Applications are now being accepted.
VOLU, founded in 1956, is one of the oldest and most
respected (and most successful) service organizations in Africa.
Volunteer Projects include building schools and clinics,
farming, rainforest conservation, reforestation, computer
training, health education, youth work, etc. These projects are
self-help, grassroots and, most important, sustainable
by the local communities.
Volunteers are welcome to join with Ghanaians and local
villagers
in 1, 2 and 3 week work projects.
Go to the above Website for detailed project descriptions
and general information on how to participate.
Participants make their own airfare arrangements to Ghana.
[Ghana Airways, departing from NYC and other U.S. & int'l
cities,
often will offer VOLU volunteers a discount on airfare.]
The VOLU program is unique. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, and
provides one of the most affordable and in-depth ways
to experience Africa -- an Africa that tourists would likely
never know or see.
All are invited. Student participants are encouraged
to arrange with their faculty advisor, or department,
to receive academic credit for their experience;
generally from 7 to 12 units is recommended.
Please write to VOLU (by regular airmail) to obtain the new
schedule of workcamps and projects:
The General Secretary
Voluntary Workcamps Association [VOLU]
PO Box 1540
Accra, GHANA
Or, to obtain info & application faster, phone the VOLU
office in Ghana, at:
Ph: 233-21-663486
FX: 233-21-665960 (include a cover letter addressed to the
General Secretary-VOLU)
It is recommended that you both WRITE and PHONE (or FAX).

Wild, naturally-evolving forests are an essential
component of the biosphere's life support system.
Aside from providing innumerable services to
humanity, forests fulfill the vital functions
of preserving wildlife habitat, stabilizing
the Earth's climate, protecting watersheds,
and maintaining soil productivity. They are
home to most of the world's vast array of life forms.
Everyone must aggressively do their part.
If we do not, history will be justifiably
unkind to us. We must demand what is needed
to support all life on Earth.
Rainforest Action Network's mission is to protect
the Earth's rainforests and support the rights
of their inhabitants through education,
grassroots organizing, and non-violent
direct action.

WORKCAMPS (Volunteer Projects) in AFRICA and WORLDWIDE
OPEN TO ALL
Introduction: The projects generally last 2 - 3
weeks and consist of about 10 - 20 volunteers
drawn from a number of countries. Projects are
often in remote areas, in regions where local
people may have minimal opportunity for meeting
others from different countries. The volunteer
groups bring new ideas and experiences into
communities, providing a stimulus for ongoing
work. The individual volunteers benefit from
the interaction both within the group and with
the local communities. The experience gives
them the opportunity to travel to another
country, use their time productively and
make a positive contribution to the local
community. They also have the chance to
widen their horizons through meeting
and learning from each other and local people.

NetAid: Fight Poverty thru OnLine Volunteering
Netaid.org is a joint initiative by the United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP) and Cisco Systems. It serves
as a platform of action to involve global citizens in the
fight against poverty. Online volunteering through
Netaid.org opens new doors for part-time, home-based
volunteers who can use the Internet as an avenue to
contribute their expertise.
Logging onto the Netaid.org web site,
http://www.netaid.org/OV, people from around the world are
able to peruse online volunteer opportunities submitted by
non-governmental organizations to serve as volunteers and
submit their applications.
Many of the current assignments are in the areas of
publications development (articles, design, promotional
material) and teaching. Other activities taken up by
online volunteers include research, promotion, web-related
work, translation, information technology, professional
advice/consultancies, fundraising and administration.

Issues:
* 18-yr sentence without the possibility of appeal
* Vienna Convention: Non-Respect of Consular Accords
* Inquisitorial versus Adversarial Justice Systems
* Guilt by Association & Absence of Presumption of
Innocence
* Excess of the state
* Underlying racism & xenophobia
A Black American tourist was wrongfully arrested on arriving in
France, and was held 20 months without trial, bail or opportunity
to defend himself. Finally, after a charade of a trial
("presumption
of innocence," as you may know, is a very iffy proposition in
French
Inquisitorial Justice, which can establish someone's GUILT based
on
his associates'), he was sentenced to 18 years without
possibility of appeal.
Read about the "The Dark Side of the City of Lights" for this
tourist given a virtual "death sentence" in France. In July,
he passed his 7th consecutive birthday behind French bars,
isolated and depressed, in a space barely 6X12-ft -- not even
enough room to allow him to stretch out his 6'3" frame.

At the above site, also find French scholar Prof. Loic Wacquant's
highly praised research paper on the "Penal Management of
Poverty," on the failure of the War on Drugs, and on the
wildly disproportionate, wrongful imprisonment of
blacks and minorities in the USA and European
countries.
XENOPHOBIA & RACISM; TORTURE & ABUSE
Recently, the European Court of Human Rights
found France guilty of violating "international
standards" on torture and fair trial, and of a
pattern of employing excessive, too often fatal
force along racial and ethnic lines:

FRENCH PRISONS FILLED WITH FOREIGNERS & MINORITIES
In France, foreigners comprise only 6% of the general
population, but a WHOPPING 29% of French prisons.
For the same crimes, foreigners and French nationals
born to immigrants, are treated far more severely
and inhumanely than are white French. Professor Wacquant
documents France's worsening pattern of Human Rights
violations against foreigners and even against French
citizens who are of non-white background.
