Actually Both sides are wrong. Friend is far more wrong than UPS is.

First, our friend:

He erred in not insuring the package. Insurance for the transportation of
packages is very rarely declined, it's offered as
an extra cost item to protect expensive packages. He signed a contract
(Contract of Carriage) which states that the carrier
(UPS) will be limited to about $100.00 or what the limitation is set to.
More requires insurance. Simple fact of life in transportation. All courier
companies (even FedEx) have the same rule.

The same thing holds true with airlines. If you're carrying $2500 worth of
stuff in your luggage that can't be replaced, buy
insurance because the airlines will only provide you up to a certain amount,
and it certainly won't be $2500.00.

He also erred in not keeping track of the package as it was moving through
the UPS system. Quite easy to do in this
day and age of the Internet. For a $900.00 item I would be sharp eyed, and
check on it from time to time as it moves
through the system. If it had stopped for a long time and hasn't reached
him, then I would backtrack.

One hopes he kept a copy of all documentation, he can probably still
backtrack to find the last known location of it, but
he won't get $900.00 for his compensation. No way.

Second, UPS:

They erred in simply loosing the packages, but when you're handling
gazillions of packages every day there's bound to be
at least a few of those lost. Perhaps the ingnoramous who was checking in
the package for delivery didn't fill out the stickers
properly and perhaps didn't make sure they were stuck on solidly. UPS
probably offers insurance as an add on cost, but
they are not legally bound to do so. It's more of making money off the
commission of the insurance offer, but the buyer gets
a bit of a piece of mind.

Then there's:

Did he clearly seal the package and set the documentation right? I always
write the Bill of Lading (Waybill) Number clearly
on the front of the package in black in big letters and numbers so that the
doltsthat handle it can see it. Did the stickers stick on the package right?
If you lose those, then it causes problems. Those little stickers have your
package number on them. I've seen packages split open like an autopsy
patient simply because the shipper didn't seal the package properly.

I've had packages misdirected, but was quickly able to find out where it
ended up and had the carrier redirect it on their
own dime.

Also kept close tabs on the progress of other shipments as well. Like that
$5 million worth of lumber I sent to Elkhart Indiana
a few years ago by railroad and truck.

Painful lesson, but lesson to be learned here for others. be very specific
and precise when shipping, esp. when dealing with
someone through eBay. Transportation has evolved so much for the shipper
it's very easy to keep an eye on shipments
from the moment they leave the house or store.

Worked in claims and work in logistics for a transportation company, so I
know my way around a cargo trailer and
sorting room.

And no contrary to popular belief, the courier company sort guys do not use
your package as a football playing as if they were making a long bomb in the
fourth quarter of a 14-18 spread imaginary football game at noon hour...
