This is a problem with a standard ISA PNP modem. In this case it is a
Diamond SupraExpress I Speakerphone, but I have duplicated the problem
on two other modems that I know are good. I tried a PCI modem and it
does function normally. This is what occurs: I plug in the modem, it is
recognized as a device on boot up in the bios (dos screen while
booting). The computer bios is set to one com port (2 only, 3e8 I
believe). Windows (98 SE) correctly id's the modem on boot, installs
software from the CD and it is seen on the device mgr as com1 3f8 int 4.
There are no conflicts, I checked. I also chked the IO ports; no
conflicts. The listed ports are as follows: com2, lpt1. No com1. On the
diags tab on modem props, it says "failed to communicate, make sure
modem turned on, etc." Remedies taken so far: Removed scsi card from
other 16 bit slot; disabled sound card; changed 16 bit slot for modem;
manually configured modem to com1 by jumper; reinstalled Serial.vxd,
Vcomm.vxd, and Serialui.dll serial port drivers; attempted direct
connection to com1 using Hyperterminal; forced modem to go on com3 and 5
by enabling bios com 1 port; disabled all com ports in bios. Note that
any time the modem is on a particluar com port, that com port DOES NOT
APPEAR in device manager under "ports" and I suspect that may be the
porblem. I have no way to correct this though. I tried to add a com port
to the device mgr manually, but the computer stalls (hour glass never
goes away) when I do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
