私は、html-modeだと"<"を入力するのに C-c < としなくてはならない
のがいやで、html-helper-modeに乗り換えました。
あと、html-helper-modeの

(setq html-helper-do-write-file-hooks t
      html-helper-build-new-buffer t
      html-helper-address-string "...")

あたりを便利に使ってます(タイムスタンプやsignatureのようなものを
入れることができます)。
