shift right, indent's by 8 chars

Hi all,
  If I set my tabstop=8 and do a shift right (by selecting the text &
pressing '>' char), it does it by 1 tab.
  Now if I set my tabstop=4 & do the same thing, it does it by 2 tabs.
  I like my setting to have tabstop=4, but because of this I've to
change back & forth my settings between 8 & 4.
  Is there any other solution??
