Hi - I am struggling terribly trying to learn the first 881 Kanji characters. These, I am told, would be roughly the 6th grade reader in a Japanese school. My greatest difficulty is that I have no reading material that is written at this level that would allow me to practice reading. The only things I have are newspapers, which use considerably more characters, most of which are in my dictionary, and literature/poetry which uses MANY more characters, many of which are NOT in my dictionary. In America we grew up with readers for first and second grade children called the "Dick and Jane" books, which had such charming stories as "See Spot. See Spot run. Look, Jane. Look at Spot. Look at Spot run." The point being that the handful of words that the child knows are used in a "real" way by reading stories that use them. Gradually new words were added, and each story used most of the new words, as well as reinforcing the first words. I don't necessarily want See Spot Run, but if anyone could recommend some very basic reading material, or a text book that teaches Kanji in such a fashion, I would be grateful. My work schedule does not allow me to attend classes at this time, although I am still hoping to do so in the not so distant future. Thanks very much. /++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++\ ! Later + Systems Programmer ! !
