A while back I posted a query about starting a Haiku list, but there was an insufficient response to start the list. However there were many people from THIS list that were interested, so to them I direct this posting. I just received (via Inter-library loan) a fabulous work that I wanted to share with you all. I love to read Haiku, but my knowledge of nihongo SUCKs right now, so I have a very difficult time, even with dictionary in hand. The book that I just received is: _An Anthology of Haiku Ancient and Modern_ Translated and annotated by Asataro Miyamori Published by Greenwood Press Publishers Westport, CT, 1970. The book contains over 1000 Haiku, with the text in Kanji, Romanji, and English (as Translated by Miyamori-san) and several beautiful illustrations by Mr. Hyakusui Hirafuku. The works are arranged in chronological sections, the first being devoted to Basho, then to his greatest students, and then others of that period, and similar sections for Buson, Issa, and Shiki, with the final section being on contemporary (as of 1930!) poets. This clearly illustrates the progression (or degression depending on your thoughts on the subject) of the Haiku form of poetry. It is interesting to see how the students' work so complimented the master they followed, and how other poets of that period either copied the school, or rebelled from it. By arranging each work in Kanji, Romanji, and English it allows the student of nihongo to enjoy poetry that is "out of reach" at his current level, while including the original language, which is the sad fact about most English Haiku collections. For this reason I strongly recommend this book to those who find themselves in my predicament. /++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++\ ! Later + Systems Programmer ! !
