SUMMERY: Parallel Graphics Algorithms
--------------------------------------
Introduction:
Some time ago, I posted a question to serveral net newsgroups, for a
bibliography on parallel graphics algorithms and related information.
The responses I've got so far are encouraging to me for further
investigation and experiment...
Interestingly as "Sam Uselton" <uselton@nas.nasa.gov> quoted, "Ray
tracing has been called the canonical embarassingly parallel
algorithm ...", graphics applications are almost always "the first
demos running on any new parallel machines".
Lots of work and opportunities in this area -- so what are we waiting
for?
Bibliographies:
* A ray tracing bibliography with abstracts available on
princeton.edu in /pub/Graphics/Papers. There's a file
"NetPapers" in which you could find which papers are available
on the net, and where to get them.
* A cross-indexed ray-tracing bibliography by "Rick Speer"
<speer@cs.colorado.edu>. Vast amount of information: more than
500 citations from 1968; papers from SIGGRAPH, Graphics
Interface, Eurographics, etc.; cross-indexed by keyword and
author; gloossary of keywords... Available in PostScript
"speer.raytrace.bib.ps.Z":
weedeater.math.yale.edu /pub/Papers
wuarchive.wustl.edu /graphics/graphics/bib/RT.BIB.Speer
karazm.math.uh.edu /pub/Graphics
gondwana.ecr.mu.oz.au /pub/papers
nic.funet.fi /pub/sci/papers/graphics
* Eric Haines (erich@eye.com) maintains ray tracing and
radiosity/global illumination bibliographies. These are in
"refer" format, and so can be searched electronically (a simple
awk script to search for keywords is included with each). The
bibliographies are available at most of the sites listed above,
and the most current versions are maintained at princeton.edu:
/pub/Graphics/Papers as "RayBib.*" and "RadBib.*".
* Tom Wilson <wilson@cs.ucf.edu> has collected over 300 abstracts
from ray tracing related research papers and books. The
information is essentially in plaintext, and Latex and troff
formatting programs are included. This collection is available
at most the sites above as "rtabs.*".
* Scott Whitman <slim@llnl.gov> is gathering another
bibliography. It will be sent out to the comp.graphics and
comp.parallel newsgroup.
* Ulrich Neuman from Chapel Hill is working on a bibliography for
parallel volume randering.

Abstract:
The problem of quickly generating three-dimensional synthetic
imagery has remained challenging for computer graphics
researchers due to the large amount of data which is processed
and the complexity of the calculations involved. This book
involves a thorough investigation into the problem of using a
massvely parallel computer to perform three-dimensional
computer graphics rendering. The algorithms which are analyzed
in this monograph present several alternative approaches to
image space decomposition as well as remote memory access. A
number of pointers are given so that researchers intending to
develop their own parallel rendering algorithm will be able to
obtain high performance and good speedup from a variety of
multiprocessor architectures.
