As most of you know, statistics for the time it takes to run the standard REDUCE test file (available as reduce.tst in most distributions) have been maintained for many years. In particular, a description of the test file with statistics for REDUCE 3.2 was reported in Jed B. Marti and Anthony C. Hearn, "REDUCE as a Lisp Benchmark", SIGSAM Bull. 19 (1985) 8-16. A table of timings for the current release is available as the "timings" file in the REDUCE Network Library. Until recently, the record for running the test file, 0.97 seconds, was held by the PSL version running on a Cray Y-MP C90 supercomputer. In fact many machines have been approaching the one second mark for some time now --- the Cray was the first to break this barrier. We now have a new record: the PSL version on an HP 9000/735 workstation has run the test file in 0.75 seconds. As even faster RISC chips become available, I am confident this record will fall below half a second within a year or so. Tony Hearn
