The latter naming scheme is used in the Newcastle Connection
[Brownbridge et al.  1982] and Netix [Wambecq 1983] and is
derived from the creation of a virtual "superdirectory"
above the root directories of all the connected
machines. Thus "/.."  means start at the local root
directory and go upward one level (to the superdirectory),
and then down to the root directory of machine.
