Subject: Know of Japanese studies of Videogame use?
Hi Hiro,
In America, video arcades are mainly populated by teenage boys and the
videogame industry seems boy-oriented.
One of Interval's researchers, Brenda Laurel, is leading a project to
investigate the creation of videogames for the other half of the teenage
market, the girls.
[with thoughts that if we can solve this problem we may get insights into
other issues of making computers more approachable]
One way or another, Japanese culture has to be part of this situation (since
many games seem to be ported from Japanese versions, and many of the companies
are Japanese. And even Nintendo, which is played by at least some girls in
America, named their portable "GameBoy" instead of "GameKid".
[what is "Gameboy" called in Japan, by the way?]
Although I'm interested in your viewpoints, since this is the beginning of a
research project I'm wondering if you can help me find published studies or
published papers related to videogame design and use in Japan.
I'm most interested in things that discuss gender, but I'd be happy to hear
of anything.
[and though English-language papers would be easiest, we can get things
translated]
Thanks for whatever you can come up with. I'm hoping that there are on-line
abstract listings that might make this type of search pretty easy for you.
