Since there are several site that sent me mail claiming the same TCP/IP
(non)connectivity problem with their PC's with IRIX 4.0.1, I thought I'd
post the solution. Many thanks to Mary Artibee at SGI for the solution!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is from the 4.0.5 release notes and sounds like it fits your situation:
"As of IRIX 4.0, the default TCP window size is 60 KBytes. Unfortunately,
there are still some other brands of computers and software that expect the
TCP window size to be a signed, 16-bit value. Such broken systems do poorly
when confronted with an IRIS's willingness to accept 60 KBytes of input (that
is, an unsigned integer larger than 32 K). If you experience a problem
interoperating with other hardware, in particular with PCs and Macintosh
computers, where FTP or PC-NFS sessions hang, try decreasing the following
IRIX kernel values to less than 32768. As root, change the following lines
in /usr/sysgen/master.d/bsd by reducing "60" to "30":
/* TCP window sizes/socket space reservation */
unsigned long tcp_sendspace = 30 * 1024; /* must be < 64K */
unsigned long tcp_recvspace = 30 * 1024; /* must be < 64K */
Then, run autoconfig and reboot."
