We've seen the problem I'm about to describe on two different SunOS 4.1.2
machines. One's an IPC and the other's a 4/670 (2-processor). We've got
several other SunOS 4.1.2 machines that don't exhibit this problem, even
though they're set up the same way. The problem:

After the machine boots, sendmail accepts SMTP connections, but all users
are reported to be unknown. I can telnet to port 25 on one of these machines,
type "expn brian" and get "brian...user unknown". When I quit, even
"root...user unknown" is reported. (It's trying to send to root about the
failure.)
If I kill and restart sendmail, it works fine.

I did a trace on the daemon process handling my telnet connection. When
I've restarted sendmail, I see it try to connect to YP (which we don't run)
three times, then open "/etc/passwd" and read the entries from there. Trace
showed:

open("/etc/passwd", 0, 0666) = 9

When the "bad" invocation of sendmail is running right after a reboot, trace
shows the three attempts at YP, then it shows three failed attempts to open a
file. Trace shows:

open("" ", 0, 0666) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

So it appears that the bad invocation of sendmail has lost the string
"/etc/passwd", and is giving a bogus filename to open.
I've thunk and thunk real hard about why this might happen, but I'm
stumped. Any ideas? We don't have anything unusual in our startup files
before sendmail is started. There's also nothing much different between Sun's
that work and Sun's that don't work.
Anybody seen or heard of this before?

I replied to email to two people having this problem. In both cases they
confirmed my diagnosis which was admittedly a guess (but not a wild guess).

My suggestion in each case, based on experience with IDA sendmail, was to
stop using a freeze file (/etc/sendmail.fc).

Sun builds its 'sendmail' using its shared libraries. Our experience is that
the assumptions made by 'sendmail' in freezing the configuration are
incompatible with the SunOS implementation of shared libraries. Using a
frozen config can result in a wide variety of peculiar behaviors.

If you are compiling your own 'sendmail' try static binding. If you are
using the SunOS binary, don't use freeze files. Or, if you want to live
dangerously and you only experience problems with the daemon, at least
start up the daemon without the freeze file
[/usr/lib/sendmail -bd -q1h -C/etc/sendmail.cf].

The situation is usually worst with the daemon, since the state of the
dynamic link library at the time the daemon is started is likely to be
quite different from the state at the time the freeze file is built.
