Ex-Klan leader's Web page links to newspaper sites

Mercury News Staff and Wire Reports

Web surfers hunting this week for online versions of the San
Jose Mercury News and at least nine other newspapers have
risked landing on the Web site of an ex-Ku Klux Klan leader
promoting white separatism.

Someone in recent days registered Internet addresses that
included part or all of the newspapers' names, then linked
those addresses to the racist site. Anyone who typed one of
the addresses -- called domain names -- into their Web browser
to find a news site saw Gothic letters across the screen, and
a cross circled with the words ``White Pride World Wide.''

The Mercury News was alerted to the problem Wednesday
afternoon by the Chicago Sun-Times, which also was affected.
The newspaper referred the matter to Karen Stevenson, general
counsel for Knight Ridder, parent company of the Mercury News.

``Our most important asset is our name and the trust in which
it is held by our community,'' said Bob Ryan, director of
Mercury Center, the online service of the Mercury News.
``This is an obvious attempt to take advantage of that, and
we'll do all we can to stop it.''

The new domain names were registered to a post office box
in Suisun City, according to records at Network Solutions Inc.,
the Herndon, Va., company that oversees allocations of Internet
addresses.

Messages left at the phone number listed in the records were not
returned. The owner of www.Stormfront.org, the white-separatist site,
Don Black, 45, of West Palm Beach, Fla., denied involvement.

Other affected newspapers were the San Francisco Examiner,
Philadelphia Inquirer, Atlanta Constitution, Cleveland Plain
Dealer, Albuquerque Tribune, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, St. Louis
Post-Dispatch and the London Telegraph.
